An update

Sorry for the lack of updates over the past week or so, we've been busy preparing the first of the Kickstarter rewards for release. Last weekend we made the PDF files of the comic available to backers at the $14 tier and above. This weekend we'll be releasing the Carbon Grey EP by April Gee. Hoang will send out download details on Saturday.

On Monday we shot a short interview with April about the songs on the EP, which we'll make available in the near future. We've also been busy preparing new pages for the Vol.2 Trade Paperback, prepping the trading cards rewards and sending out pages for Vol.3 for Kinsun to color. Things are happening!

CG Kickstarter Campaign Funded!

We made it with a total of $56,000! Thank you all so much!

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1457867026/carbon-grey-the-final-chapter/posts/508644

Sometimes when I re-read some of my posts I sound like a broken record. It seems that I keep repeating the same phrases - "thank you" again and again. I feel like I lack the ability to express my gratitude. I don't know what else I can say, so I'll say it in Vietnamese instead - Cảm ơn!

We did it together - all 861 backers, co-workers, friends and families. When I think about the time I first drew the sketch of Mathilde (see below) and Giselle in 2002, it seems so distant but somehow feels like it was yesterday. Today, you've all granted me my wish - to finish what I started.

And, of course, we unlocked stretch goal #2 - the miniature replica of Giselle's MP5 for backers who pledged at the $50 tier and above - an amazing achievement. We didn't quite make it far enough to unlock the figurine of Mathilde to stand beside Giselle, but maybe it's just as well - they'd only fight :)

Before it's too late I want to say a special thank you too to the other creative teams on Kickstarter that held cross-promotions with us, and helped to tell the world about Carbon Grey. We are in awe of your work.
In the following week, I will send out the survey to collect your addresses - please add any special notes you have for me then. Hopefully you all caught the mix-up with the US shipping costs (See the main page for details), but don't worry if you missed it, I'll go over it with you at the survey stage. We'll also start making the digital rewards available for download as soon as they're ready - starting over the next few days with the back issues. Many of you have asked about the add-ons; please PM me through Kickstarter. This makes it easier for me to keep track of everyone's special orders and changes.

One last time - thank you very much! it has been a wonderful and exciting experience. More things to come soon!

So this is it, I can finally say these words. Coming soon - our final chapter of Carbon Grey - where this epic saga comes to a close as we unravel the mystery behind the rock and Gottfaust's prophecy. We promise to close all lose ends and wrap up all unanswered questions. We're currently underway on the first issue and will continue to update you (here, on Facebook, our blog and on Twitter) with our progress. It's going to be a good one!

Best - Hoang

VICTORY!!!

A message from Hoang

WOW, what a roller coaster ride! It was exhilarating, stressful but most importantly FUN - a lot of fun. It took us over a month to plan, execute and finally launch the campaign. With baited breath we crossed our fingers and hoped that people would take notice of our work and support us. But we knew that, no matter how well we planned, nothing was guaranteed.

Today, you made it happen. You guys have given us an opportunity to finish what we started over a decade ago. THANK YOU ALL VERY MUCH!!!

When planning the campaign we tried to come up with interesting and unusual rewards that might reflect the spirit of Carbon Grey (beyond just giving away copies of the comic), and as a result we’ve had quite an adventure. It’s given us the opportunity to commission new work from artists and musicians, to learn about manufacturing processes and gain new crafting skills making custom rewards.

It’s also led to us making a lot of new contacts and friends in other creative fields across the Kickstarter community. The feedback and advice from you - our backers and supporters - has encouraged us to go further still.

Unexpectedly Kickstarter has taken us and Carbon Grey into areas we’d never imagined - music, toy manufacture and perhaps even a tabletop game. We’re so grateful for this experience – it’s as valuable to us as the funding itself.

At its heart (as you’ll discover in volume three!) Carbon Grey is a story about the creative urge, and the consequences of suppressing it. We’re honored that you’ve allowed us the chance to express ours :).

Best - Hoang

Carbon Grey - the game?

A message from Hoang.

I’m excited to announce that we are in the early stages of discussions with Modiphius Entertainment - the company behind "Achtung! Cthulhu" – to develop a Carbon Grey table top game!

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/modiphius/achtung-cthulhu-the-ww2-keepers-and-investigators?ref=live

Over the past few years many of you have suggested to us that the world of Carbon Grey could be a great setting for a series of games and miniatures, and we feel the same!

Nothing is concrete yet, but in the meanwhile the team at Modiphius Entertainment has generously offered to promote and support our Kickstarter campaign. If you’d like to see their beautiful work head on over to http://www.modiphius.com/ . Modiphius are keeping the door open for late entrants to contribute to their successful Kickstarter campaign. Feel free to message them through their Kickstarter page and show your support! http://www.modiphius.com/contact.html

Kickstarter Press Release

Artist Hoang Nguyen Launches Kickstarter Campaign for final chapter of Carbon Grey

SAN JOSE, California – May 13, 2013. Artist Hoang Nguyen is today launching a Kickstarter campaign to help fund the final volume of his epic series Carbon Grey.

An epic story of family and duty set against the backdrop of a great war, vividly realized through beautiful fully painted artwork, Carbon Grey has been Nguyen’s labor of love for over ten years. In 2010 the project came to the attention of Image Comics, who published the first volume to critical acclaim in March 2011.

After self-funding the project for almost a decade Nguyen last year looked to fans of Carbon Grey and the Kickstarter community at large for support. The campaign was a success, raising over $40,000 and enabling Nguyen and his creative team to complete a second three-issue volume, also published by Image.

Now, Nguyen is preparing to bring his 11-year journey to a close with the third and final volume of the Carbon Grey saga. With the original creative team of Khari Evans (Daughters of the Dragon, Thor, Harbinger), Kinsun Loh, Paul Gardner (Afro Samurai, Splatterhouse) and Nguyen himself all committed to the project Hoang is turning once more to the Kickstarter community to help fund production.

“I was so grateful to the Kickstarter organization and community – they provided a real lifeline when I needed it", said Nguyen. “Without their support Carbon Grey Volume Two might never have been realized. We worked hard to deliver a final product that would justify their faith in us. I’m hoping that all those who generously contributed before will once again lend us their support and help me to bring the story of the Sisters Grey to a conclusion.”

About Carbon Grey

Carbon Grey is a comic book mini-series created by artist Hoang Nguyen and published by Image Comics. Set against the backdrop of a great war the series follows twin sisters Mathilde and Giselle Grey, members of a noble family dedicated to protecting the Kaiser of Mitteleuropa, as they struggle to reconcile duty with their own beliefs and ambitions. When the Kaiser is killed a vast conspiracy is uncovered, centered around a prophecy made long ago by Gottfaust, father to the Greys and hero of Mitteleuropa, that the 13th sister – the Carbon Grey – will one day spark a revolution.

A message from Hoang

Phew! The second chapter of Carbon Grey has been pretty rough for us. Unfortunately things never go as planned. You might have noticed(!) that we missed our original release dates. This was due mainly to scheduling conflicts with other projects. But the team rallied and we pulled through. We’re proud of what we have accomplished and as ever we thank you for your understanding and support.

We lost a dear friend (Josh Simpson) while working on the book, he was a big fan and a huge supporter of CG. We miss him dearly and dedicate this volume to him.

As we draw a close to this 2nd chapter, we're already prepping for the third and final volume - the conclusion to this epic saga. It'll be a while before we can solicit the next story arc, but you can keep track of our progress online at:

http://carbongrey.blogspot.com/
www.facebook.com/carbongreycomic

As artists we are always striving for the best. Our goal from the start has always been to give our readers the best entertainment possible, and that has not changed.

Join us later this year for the final volume of Carbon Grey; it will be glorious!

Best,
Hoang Nguyen Feb. 2013
